How Long Do GRP Tanks Last
in Saudi Arabia?

How long do GRP tanks last? No single figure fits every tank. Suppliers publish anywhere from about 20 to 40 years, but we found no published Saudi test data behind those numbers. A tank’s real life depends on what it stores, which resin it uses, how hot and exposed the site is, how it was installed, and how well someone inspects it.

This guide is for engineers, contractors and facility managers who need to judge a lifespan claim before they buy. Spark Fiberglass, a GRP tank manufacturer in Saudi Arabia, explains what decides tank life, how to test a supplier’s number, and when to repair or replace.

How Long Do GRP Tanks Last?

A GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) tank can serve for decades, and suppliers commonly quote 20 to 40 years. No figure is guaranteed. Service life depends on the stored liquid, resin choice, temperature, sun exposure, installation and maintenance. Ask any supplier to show the evidence behind its number.

GRP is also called FRP (fiber-reinforced plastic). If you are new to the material, see what GRP is. For Spark’s range of water, septic, chemical, fire water and fuel tanks, see GRP tanks in Saudi Arabia.

Spark does not publish a guaranteed service life for its tanks without project-specific evidence. We think a buyer is better served by a clear method than by a headline number.

Why Do Published Lifespan Numbers Disagree?

Published numbers disagree because they rest on different kinds of evidence, and most give none. One supplier says 20 to 40 years, another says 30 to 40, and others give no figure. A number is only as useful as the proof behind it.

Design standards matter, but they are not lifespan promises. AWWA D120 covers thermoset fiberglass-reinforced plastic tanks for water and other liquids used in water supply service. Its scope covers atmospheric, vented, cylindrical and spherical tanks, above or below ground. The D120-09 preview we reviewed contains no service-life statement. In the Gulf, GSO has adopted EN 13121-1:2025 for above-ground GRP tanks and vessels. GSO 2443:2014 covers underground GRP potable water tanks, and GSO 2450:2014 covers above-ground ones.

What Decides How Long GRP Tanks Last?

Seven factors decide tank life: stored liquid, temperature, sun and weather, installation, burial, maintenance and build quality. Each one gives you something to ask or check before you buy.

Factor

Why it matters

What to do

Stored liquid and resin

The inner corrosion barrier must suit the liquid and its concentration

Get the resin and liner specification in writing, matched to your liquid

Temperature

Design limits exist; AWWA D120 covers service up to 82°C above ground and 66°C underground

State the maximum operating temperature, including heat from the sun

Sun and weather

Sunlight, UV, dust and humidity reduce GRP strength over time

Ask what exterior finish protects against UV

Installation and foundation

Poor support or uneven loading puts stress on the shell

Follow the manufacturer’s installation guide and use a level, supported base

Buried or above ground

Different standards and limits apply

Specify which, and confirm the tank is designed for it

Maintenance

Problems are cheaper to fix when found early

Set an inspection routine from day one

Build quality

Workmanship affects every other factor

Ask about the manufacturer’s quality system

On the last point, Spark holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management-system certificates; see our ISO certificates. These cover our management systems. They are not product certifications, and we do not claim them as such.

Does Saudi Heat, Sun and Humidity Shorten GRP Tank Life?

Heat, sun and humidity can reduce GRP strength over time. A study of GRP specimens exposed outdoors in Oman found that tensile strength, flexural strength and modulus fell as exposure to sunlight, UV, dust and humidity increased.

Researchers from the University of Guelph and Sultan Qaboos University published the study in the IIUM Engineering Journal in 2012. The abstract gives no figures, so it shows the direction of the effect, not a rate. We do not convert it into years.

Based on industry knowledge: Saudi sites combine strong sun and high summer temperatures, and Eastern Province sites add coastal humidity. Salt air may add further exposure, but we have not found a source that measures its effect on GRP.

Three practical responses follow:

  • Specify the maximum operating temperature, including solar heating.
  • Ask what protects the exterior against UV.
  • Inspect the outside surface regularly.

How Do You Check a Lifespan Claim Before Buying?

Check a lifespan claim by asking the supplier for its basis. A figure with no stated basis is a sales statement. A figure with test data, a standard or inspection records can be checked.

Ask these seven questions:

  1. Which liquid, concentration and temperature is the tank rated for?
  2. Which resin and corrosion barrier does the tank use, and why?
  3. Which design standard was the tank built to?
  4. What test or inspection evidence supports the stated lifespan?
  5. Is the figure a warranty? Get any warranty terms in writing.
  6. What exterior protection handles sun and UV exposure?
  7. What inspection and maintenance plan does the supplier recommend?

How Do You Inspect a GRP Tank?

Inspect a GRP tank in three parts: the exterior, the interior and the supports. Look for surface changes first, then structural problems. Record each defect with its location and a photograph.

Inspection checklists from the sources we reviewed cover these items:

  • Surface discoloration and a powdery surface
  • Crazing (fine surface cracks) and shrinkage cracks
  • Blistering, softening and voids
  • Resin loss and exposed fibre
  • Delamination (layers separating)
  • Structural cracks and deformation
  • Mechanical damage and unsafe fasteners
  • Nozzles, flanges, manways, ladders and tank supports

Inspection firms also describe a Barcol hardness test at random interior spots, which checks how well the resin has cured. The ATS inspection page lists FTPI RP 2007-1, a recommended practice for in-service inspection of aboveground atmospheric FRP tanks and vessels. It also lists TAPPI TIP 0402-28.

No Saudi inspection interval applies that we could source. As one example, an FRP inspection form hosted by Sydney Water uses 12 months in non-corrosive environments and six months in corrosive ones, adjustable for site and asset age. That is one operator’s schedule, not a requirement here.

Interior inspection means confined-space entry. Use a trained and equipped team and follow applicable safety rules.

Should You Repair or Replace a GRP Tank?

Repair suits localized damage, and replacement or relining suits widespread damage. A qualified inspector should decide after assessing the tank. The table is general guidance.

Condition found

Typical response

Light surface dulling or crazing outside

Monitor and refinish the exterior as the manufacturer advises

Localized impact damage or a small leak

Repair by a qualified FRP repairer

Widespread blistering, softening or exposed fibre inside

Expert assessment; relining or replacement may be needed

Delamination or structural cracking

Structural assessment before further use

Repeated repairs at rising cost

Compare the repair history against replacement

How Does GRP Lifespan Compare With Steel and Concrete?

GRP does not rust, which removes one failure mode that steel tanks face. Every material has its own limits, though. GRP depends on chemical compatibility, temperature and UV protection, so the better material depends on the project.

For a side-by-side comparison, read GRP vs steel vs concrete tanks.

Common Mistakes When Judging Tank Lifespan

  • Accepting a number with no stated basis.
  • Ignoring the stored liquid and resin match.
  • Skipping inspection after installation.
  • Choosing on price without comparing specifications.
  • Treating a lifespan figure as a warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Suppliers commonly quote 20 to 40 years, but no figure is guaranteed. Life depends on the resin, temperature, sun exposure, installation and maintenance. Ask for the evidence behind any number, and set up regular inspections from the start.

Heat and sunlight can reduce GRP strength over time. An outdoor study in Oman found that strength and modulus fell with greater exposure to sunlight, UV, dust and humidity. Specify your maximum operating temperature and ask what protects the exterior.

Yes. GRP tanks need regular inspection of the exterior, interior and supports. Early detection of crazing, blistering or leaks makes repairs easier. Interior checks involve confined-space entry, so use trained personnel.

We found no Saudi requirement. One Australian utility’s inspection form uses 12 months in non-corrosive environments and six months in corrosive ones. Ask a qualified inspector to set the interval for your tank’s duty and age.

Often, yes, for localized damage such as impact marks or small leaks. Widespread blistering, delamination or structural cracking needs an expert assessment first. A qualified FRP repairer should do the repair.

No. GRP contains no iron, so it does not rust. It can still degrade through chemical attack, heat or UV exposure, which is why resin choice and exterior protection matter.

No lifespan figure is automatically a guarantee. A warranty is a written commitment with terms. Ask your supplier whether any lifespan figure is covered by warranty and request the terms in writing.
